How to read the boards

Classes are ranked for how much Toilet Paper and time they save across repeat runs. The Janitor and Rooftops chases are called out on Speedster even though that class is not first overall. Digging tools are a second board, ranked by how far they get a Mineshaft clear. Both boards are recommendations from the published effects, not a developer tier.

S tier

classesBargainerTwenty percent off shovels, food, sacks, dynamite, and the Illegal Keycard. That is the largest Toilet Paper save on every ending.

Player decision Best once you can afford it. Buy Energizer first if 900 Diamonds is still far away.

digging-toolsTrowelListed at +19 digging speed. The published Mineshaft path uses it from the fourth layer through the yellow sand, so no later shovel is required.

Player decision Priority buy on a Mineshaft run after the Spatula. Skip it on a Janitor or Rooftops farm.

A tier

digging-toolsDynamiteTwelve Toilet Paper. Breaks a layer quickly, does not damage you, and does not alert the guard.

Player decision Save a few for the last rock layers if the Trowel is already owned and you have Toilet Paper left.

classesEnergizerDigging spends 20 percent less energy, so you buy less food and stay in the hole longer. Strong on the seven-layer Mineshaft dig.

Player decision First general purchase. Prefer Speedster instead only if you are practicing a chase.

classesHyperactiveDig cooldown is 25 percent shorter, so each swing comes out faster. It helps every ending that still needs a hole.

Player decision Take it when cooldown is the limit and Bargainer is already owned, or when you would rather dig faster than pay less.

B tier

digging-toolsSpatulaListed at +17 digging speed for the third layer. Part of the 150 Toilet Paper path.

Player decision Buy it on the standard path. If an Iron Shovel is stocked and you can afford that instead, the skip is a reported option, not a priced one.

classesSpeedsterMovement is 25 percent faster. The Janitor office and the roof jumps are where that matters. It is the cheapest class.

Player decision Buy it for Janitor or Rooftops practice. Do not treat it as the Mineshaft default.

C tier

digging-toolsToy ShovelFirst real upgrade. Listed at +16 digging speed for the second layer.

Player decision Buy this before food stacks or a sack.

classesHeavy LifterCarry weight is 20 percent higher. That saves trips only if you are hauling a wide hole by yourself.

Player decision Skip it in multiplayer. A sack upgrade for Toilet Paper is usually enough before this class.

D tier

digging-toolsSpoonFree starting tool. One summary called the starter bare hands; the priced path starts at the Spoon.

Player decision Replace it as soon as the Toy Shovel is stocked.

FAQ

⛏️Dig to Escape ranking questions

Is the S tier class the right one for every ending?

No. Bargainer is ranked first because a 20 percent shop discount speeds every ending. Speedster is the better equipped class when you are already losing the Janitor office or the roof jumps.

What is being compared?

The class board uses the published Diamond costs and effects. The tool board uses the published Toilet Paper prices and which layer each shovel is for. Plastic shovel and Iron Shovel are left off because their prices were not published.
